Year 6 went for a local history walk today. As we walked into town, we compared a modern OS map of Lancaster with one from 1610. We walked to the Castle via Penny Street and Church Street, both of which were built more than 400 years ago (appearing on the 1610 map). We learnt how the castle has developed over the centuries, with some of the oldest surviving parts being built by King John (of Magna Carta fame) and Henry Bolingbroke (son of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, who went on to become Henry IV). We also went down to the Quay to learn more about Lancaster’s association with the Transatlantic slave trade in Georgian times, and its impact on Lancaster.
